3.2 Adding specific fields – for the marketplaces and Google Shopping

3.2.1 Barcode

Google Shopping and the majority of marketplaces request barcodes to allow your products to be created. There are several types, which must be added to the structure of your product catalogue.

  • EAN: 13-digit barcode (highly recommended)
  • MPN: manufacturer or supplier's ID
  • ISBN: barcode used for books
  • UPC: Universal Product Code
  • GTIN: Global Trade Item Number

Refer to channel guides in our HelpCenter or contact the channel directly to find out which of these barcodes will be relevant to you.

3.2.2 Implementing product variations

Google Shopping and the majority of marketplaces expect to have all the variations of a product. This is the content they expect:

Unique ID and parent ID

Each product variation must have:

  • a unique identifier (ID)
  • a parent ID (a shared identifier that applies to all variations of the product)
Diesel trousers size 36 ⇒ ID_unique = 128 / ID_parent = 127 (child product)

Diesel trousers size 38 ⇒ ID_unique = 129 / ID_parent = 127 (child product)

Diesel trousers size 40 ⇒ ID_unique = 130 / ID_parent = 127 (child product)

Child products and parent products

Some marketplaces, including Amazon, La Redoute and eBay require "parent products" and "child products" which are product variations. The parent product must contain all required attributes except those that are different within the product variations, such as size and colour.

  • Parent products: the showcase products of your product reference. It does not contain any variations. It is not a tangible product – it cannot be purchased. A parent product can be attached to multiple child products.
  • Child products: these are the products that can be purchased. The child product contains all the aspects that distinguish them from other child products. A child product is attached to one single parent product.

In this case, the parent ID matches the unique identifier of the parent product:

Diesel trousers ⇒ ID_unique = 127 / ID_parent = 127 (parent product)

Diesel trousers size 36 ⇒ ID_unique = 128 / ID_parent = 127 (child product)

Diesel trousers size 38 ⇒ ID_unique = 129 / ID_parent = 127 (child product)

Diesel trousers size 40 ⇒ ID_unique = 130 / ID_parent = 127 (child product)
Note: If the unique ID of your parent product is different to the ID_parent then add a field so you can differentiate between your parent and child products (e.g., a field with values like "child" or "parent").

What about products that don't have variations?

  • Simple products: each simple product is completely independent from the rest of the catalogue. The product that it represents can be purchased.

Products that don't come in different variants are simple products, they do not require an associated parent ID.

Diesel Love brooch ⇒ ID unique = 131 / ID_parent =

Diesel Peace brooch ⇒ ID unique = 132 / ID_parent =

Multiple product variations

When there are multiple product variations in your product catalogue, such as size, colour, 'size and colour', etc., your product catalogue must contain a dedicated, named field, such as "variation_type" which must be completed for parent and child product lines with the relevant variation type. There is no restriction on the values for the field but they must be shared between each variation type, e.g., "size", "size, colour" etc.

Attributes

Your product catalogue should contain as much information about your products as possible, and this information must be in specific fields. This will give you a solid base to work with, which will make it much easier to integrate your catalogue with a range of different channels and platforms.

Here's an example of additional fields that channels may ask for:

Field title Field definition
Size Mandatory if the product variation relates to size (1 size per field/variation)
Colour Mandatory if the product variation relates to colour (1 colour per feld/variation)
Material/composition Mandatory if the product variation relates to materials.
Gender "Men's"; "Women's"; "Unisex," etc.
Season "Autumn/Winter 2016"; "Spring/Summer 2017," etc.
Age "Baby;" "Teenager;" "Adult" etc.

Other example attributes include length, width, number of places, capacity, etc.
